James Van Heusen (born Edward Chester Babcock; January 26, 1913 – February 6, 1990) was an
American composer. He wrote songs for films, television and theater, and won an Emmy and four
Academy Awards for Best Original Song.
"Here's That Rainy Day" is a popular song with music by Jimmy Van Heusen and lyrics by
Johnny Burke that was published in 1953. It was introduced by Dolores Gray in the Broadway
musical Carnival in Flanders. The song has become a jazz standard with recordings by,
among others, Frank Sinatra, Bill Evans, Duke Jordan, Wes Montgomery, Paul Desmond,
Modern Jazz Quartet, Archie Shepp , McCoy Tyner
and Ella Fitzgerald.
The arrangement by Walter Abt is inspired by Joe Pass, who performed this version at the
International Summer College“ at the Bavarian Music Academy in Marktoberdorf in the year
1992. This was Joe´s last concert in Europe. Pass performed for the final time on May 7, 1994, at
a nightclub in Los Angeles before he passed away.
