LOS TANGUEROS Argentine Tangos & Klezmer

Rarely do the tonal spectrums of two instruments harmonize as congenially as on this recording. In
contrast to the bandoneon with its dominating octaves and likewise to the penetrating tone of the
accordion, the concertina remains nobly restrained in the ensemble sound, leaving the guitar enough
room for soloistic dialogue.
As a reference to the nostalgic charm of the shady tango joints of Buenos Aires, the TANGUEROS dig
up almost faded titles from Argentina's turbulent 1920s, and discover the carefully dusted melodies
from El Choclo and the Milonga de mis Amores, which ultimately also represent the substantial
value for the oeuvre of the great Astor Piazzolla.
The present repertoire deliberately omits Piazzolla's phenomenal pieces, since they have actually
already been recorded in their entirety by countless performers and diverse in mostly successful
arrangements. It is more important to me to trace the original tango forms, especially the milonga,
on the one hand, and to let the current playing styles be heard on the other hand. The 4-movement
suite Buenos Aires by Diego Maximo Pujol illustrates Piazzolla's enormous influence on today's
conventional tango compositions, as well as on the style-transcending, freer works such as the
Preludio Matinal or La Gomavera, which come from his own pen of Walter Abt.
A very personal musical preference exists for the kaleidoscope of klezmer pieces such as A Genejwe,
Yankele, Rabbi Montenyu, etc., which Walter Abt arranged and recorded together in 1997 for one of
the most important Jewish musicians and clarinet virtuosos - Giora Feidman - and which now shine in
this recording in a new sound picture filled with charm and intensity.
